Ep37: How Bad Is Gender Inequality In African Schools?

QUESTION:

Hi Gret and Prince! I recently read a book detailing the oppression women face in the developing world and was wondering if you ever see instances of gender inequality or oppression that particularly pertain to women in Malawi? How does this create challenges in building an all girls school? And what are the best solutions to these problems, particularly solutions that we can get involved in from the United States? Also, thank you so much for the work your team is doing to build this school. I believe projects like Girls Shine Academy will make countries like Malawi a better, safer, more equal place for girls to live in. Thanks!

Ep36: First Time In Africa and The Shooting In Orlando

QUESTIONS:

After listening to you and Prince talk about your different cultural expectations for borrowing money from friends in the last podcast, I’d love to hear the two of you flesh out how to have healthy friendships between Malawians and Americans, especially as it relates to issues surrounding money. What is the best way for an American to respond without damaging the relationship if a Malawian friend or acquaintance asks for money and the American is unable or disinclined to give? Are there other issues that may arise because of a discrepancy in wealth?

Ep35: Tips For Moving To Africa

QUESTIONS:

Hi Gret and Prince. I’m moving to Malawi to teach 2nd grade at ABC in July! I hope this can pertain to others that are listening, even if they aren’t moving to Malawi. ☺ I’m wondering what types of things I should bring along with me, the essentials that maybe, Gret, you feel like you needed when you moved from the US to Malawi. I’m also wondering if you have any advice for assimilating into life in Malawi after living in the US for my whole life. Prince, is there any advice that you have for new teachers at ABC, or really for any missionary coming to live in Malawi? Thank you both for all that you do. I know this podcast has been very helpful for me in getting acquainted with Malawi! Maybe I’ll even see you both when I move in July! ☺

Ep34: Orphanages, Never Aging and Albinos in Africa

QUESTIONS:

Hi Gret! I just found this podcast recently and noticed you haven’t posted in a while. Is this not a thing anymore or have you just been busy with Girls Shine Academy? Also, you talk about how you built a house for Emily and Chisomo, but they’re orphans, so wouldn’t they just live in an orphanage? Or do the village people just help take care of them? Thanks!😀

Ep32: Expat Bubble, Self-Driving Cars, Abandoned Prison Projects

QUESTIONS:

I noticed while living in Malawi that it can be easy
at times to live in “the expat bubble.” Can you explain what that
is, why you think it occurs, and how people living abroad can fight
against the temptation to only surround themselves with expats?

Ep31: Harriet Tubman and Billions Of Kwacha

Hey guys – VERY SORRY for the audio quality this week. As you can probably tell, something happened with my mic. We’ll have it figured out by next week. Sorry sorry sorry!!!

QUESTIONS:

You talk about traveling while people are still young. When I was a 3rd grader, I went overseas and lived in almost the same conditions as you are in. What do you think would have been different if you lived in Malawi as a kid?

Ep30: Prince Ran Into The Police While He Was Rioting

QUESTIONS:

What sports, games, and activities are commonly participated in by the people of Malawi? Do most of the activities originate from foreign lands (i.e. Britain or America), or are there some that are unique to the native peoples of Malawi?
